Attend either day:

Thursday, June 2, from 6:00-8:00pm, Rubin Center, report to room 201.
Saturday, June 4, from 2:00-4:00pm, Rubin Center, report to room 202.

Can’t make these dates? See below.

Casting

We are looking for a sizable cast, approximately 40-50 in all. We are casting age and gender appropriately wherever possible. Harold for instance is a 30-40 year old male and Marian is a female in her late 20’s, Winthrop is a 10 year old boy, and Mayor and his wife are in their 40s or 50s and have a teenage daughter. Reference the 1962 film with Robert Preston and Shirley Jones to see the look we’re intending.

All roles are open:
Professor Harold Hill, a con man and traveling salesman
Marian Paroo, the town librarian and part-time piano teacher
Marcellus Washburn, Harold's old friend, no longer a con man, who now lives in River City
Mayor George Shinn, a pompous local politician; suspicious of Hill
Eulalie Mackecknie Shinn, the mayor's wife
Mrs. Paroo, Marian's Irish mother
Winthrop Paroo, Marian's shy, lisping brother
The School Board (Barbershop Quartet), four bickering businessmen united by Hill
Pickalittle Ladies, Eulalie's four gossipy friends
Tommy Djilas, a young man "from the wrong side of town"; secretly seeing Zaneeta Shinn
Zaneeta Shinn, The mayor's oldest daughter; secretly seeing Tommy Djilas
Charlie Cowell, an anvil salesman who tries to expose Hill as a con man
Constable Locke, the town sheriff
Amaryllis, Marian's young piano student
Townspeople
School children

Singing

Please be prepared to sing a classic song from a musical (not The Music Man) that shows off your voice range. Please keep your selection to a maximum of 32 bars. A pianist will be there to accompany you, so bring sheet music for your accompaniment. You are not allowed to sing to tracks. Kids may simply sing "Happy Birthday" or another universal children's song our pianist might know.

Special Singers: Barbershop Quartet

Quartets are encouraged to audition as a unit. For the quartet only: you may use a number from the Music Man; for example, "Lida Rose".

Dancing

Everyone will dance-audition. Where comfortable clothing and appropriate shoes.

Special Dancing: Tap

We are including some tap in our production. Tap dancing experience is a plus.

In General

Above all, don't be nervous! We want to see you have fun performing! You’ll be given an application to fill out. If you have a resume and headshot, you’re welcome to submit them. We’ll also have a camera to take an impromptu headshot if you don’t have one. We’ll also provide you our Code of Conduct for you to read and sign.

Video Auditions

Only in the event you cannot attend either of the two audition sessions, you can submit a video audition. Send us a link to your video, hosted on a video-playing website (youtube or vimeo or the like). Don’t send a video file or mail a disc. If we can’t watch it, we’ll notify you, but we’ll not make any additional efforts. Video auditions are a courtesy and not a right. Email before May 25. Send the video link to info@summerplacetheatre.org. No links sent after that date will be reviewed.

Call-Backs

We have a call-back session scheduled for Sunday, June 5, from 2:00 - 4:00pm, at the Rubin Center. We will notify you by Saturday evening if you’re called back. (Call-backs are typically done when you’re being compared to another actor or if you’re being considered for different roles.)

Notification and offer

You’ll be offered a part by Sunday night, June 5, via phone call. Please be available.

Read-Through

We’re hitting the ground running! Read-through is Tuesday, June 7 at 7:00pm at the Rubin Center.

Rehearsals

We’ll be rehearsing regularly on Sunday afternoons and on Tuesday and Thursday nights. One week before the show opens (tech week), we’ll be rehearsing every night.

Other Details

Further details will be provided on read-through.

Costs

We do not charge actors to be in our productions as some other theatres do. The only cost an actor incurs is a script and costume supplement fee of $25, payable at read-through via cash or check, or before via our website. In addition, actors will need to supply their own stage shoes, tights, undergarments and makeup.

We look forward to seeing you at auditions. If you’re intending to go, please click on the JOIN link so we have an idea of the number of people to expect.
